i edited a mcclatchy story on this for the school paper. it said they did nothing but squabble back and forth. i REALLY don't think it matters either way if obama starts getting along with the republicans. he's not going to pull them to the lukewarm left, he's not going to do anything.

i don't think it can really be said that obama has "ideas". he's just a marketing campaign.

You should really watch the video. The ideas Obama has presented go beyond politics and into the realm of self awareness. For example, calling out republicans AND democrats on their inability to ascend their own politics and actually attempt to find solutions.

my own personal ideas about solutions are more... well, radical but I don't expect this president to uproot the current democratic system. Also, I don't think he has the ability to change anyone, but telling the republican caucus their questions amount to nothing but talking points for their own individual campaigns is radical in its own right.

yeah rachel, i think you should watch this and then run your analysis.. it's actually fascinating and not at all what you are expecting.

personally i think that the 'marketing campaign' is this idea that obama is 'not going to do anything'. this interaction with the republican caucus is far more telling of what direction things will go than the state of the union. it's an important thing to be up on. obama's main underlying project is creating a progressive climate in national politics - like a framework for debate to take place and for this to lead to action. it's pretty apparent actually, but most people seem to miss this.

also - in agreement with gwen on this one.: anyone who expects a radical left president to get elected in america would have to be lost in a day dream. so work with what you got.

i listened to this at work today.

i think its very interesting that Obama is taking the approach of actually talking about the game while playing it instead of just playing the game itself.

i also give him points for making no bones about taking responsibility when he was called out on not having fulfilled a promise he made while campaigning. it's also interesting to hear the other legislators go with the tried-and-true methods only to be repeatedly thwarted by his insistence that centrism must remain an ongoing goal.

ie: rephrasing the same question over and over to try and offend the other person.
